There are two types of people…people who view grocery shopping as an annoying errand and would prefer to have it delivered to their house and there are people like me. Whole Foods is like my version of Disneyland…I’m a kid in a candy store…my happy place… you get the picture. I could spend an hour plus going up and down every.single.aisle. taking my sweet precious time making sure I got everything on my list and didn’t miss scoping out any new products that recently hit the shelves. Sadly, my husband does not share this similar enthusiasm for grocery shopping, so this has typically been a solo Sunday outing after I’ve meal planned for the week. Well… life has changed a bit, and I now usually have a very impatient toddler tagging along. This makes having a list in hand a must, so I can stay on track while trying to keep my sidekick entertained.
Depending on the menu for the week I may buy different ingredients here and there, but these are our main kitchen staples. I keep 2 small white boards on our fridge…one is a running list of items we’ve run out of (or running dangerously low on) and the second has our weekly meal plan. I started this strategy a few months ago and it seriously does help me stay organized with the food situation in our house.
I typically buy meat, chicken and fish as needed on the day I’m going to make the recipe that calls for it. I don’t like meat sitting in the fridge all week- I’m weird like that and it will usually go bad if I don’t have a planned recipe for it that week. Below I will also note which items I buy special for Quinn that she really likes (and by really likes I mean she will eat it 2 out of the 5 times I give it to her …deep breaths).
I’m sorry in advance, but this list is in no particular order…maybe one day I’ll input it all into a pretty spread sheet or something, but until then… here ya go!

I obviously did not list every single food item in my kitchen because no one has time for that, but these are our main staples that we keep in the house on a pretty regular basis. I have been seeing a lot of my more specialty items at Target these days and they are often on sale there too!
Hopefully by sharing my list, I have provided you with some new ideas you might add to your grocery list, or maybe even inspired you to come up with your own staples list to simplify your shopping.
*Side note* my husband works right by Costco and does all our Costco shopping because I’d rather poke my eyes out than deal with that madhouse. Happy shopping!

i noticed you give your daughter food with some sugar ( apple sauce, yogurt ) and I was wondering if it’s ok. i have never given my baby sugar since I started giving him solids ( although I know there is a lot of hidden sugar is some foods), i make puree myself and only give him plain greek yogurt (that contains some sugar.. i know grrr ) no candy, no cookies… etc. well, i am no expert in these things, that’s why i need some advice. also I want to know when he can eat what we eat.
PS: I tried giving him french toast a week ago and added some honey to make it more tasty. is it ok? also, i make him home made apple sauce with some cinnamon. is it ok to add spices to baby’s food? i like to add some (turmeric, saffron, cumin and ginger to replace salt)
Thank you 🙂

I use to make all her food and food pouches too when she first started solids…but now I try not to stress so much. I try and find the lower sugar options for the products I give her and my goal for her or myself is never no sugar- not realistic. It is definitely OK to make things palatable so they will eat it! They don’t like bland food anymore than we do- so yes use spices and flavorings! Here are a few book recs that I think will really help answer a lot of these questions…anything Ellyn Satter (“Child of Mine” is a good starter book) and the book “Born to Eat” by Wendy Jo Peterson and Leslie Schilling. Hope that helps!
P.S. All dairy contains lactose aka milk sugar..so it will never be sugar free so don’t stress about that 🙂

that’s good to know. thank you so much. You’re right about the stress, it’s very stressful to spend the day wondering what to feed my baby. I should relax a bit 🙂
thank you once again for all the valuable advice 🙂
