Fitness is my jam and always has been. I’ve been super active my whole life and played D1 soccer in college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Once my soccer career ended and I didn’t have mandatory workouts, games, and practices I had to really take it upon myself to be accountable for my fitness. I’ve continued to make working out a huge priority in my life not only for my physical health, but it also does wonders for my emotional and mental health. I get in slumps like anyone else, so finding ways to stay motivated is so important…here are my top 5 strategies to get it done!
1. Schedule it in
Every Sunday I get out my day planner (love this one) and see what the week ahead is looking like. I check in with the hubs about his work schedule then write in my workout plan (and rest days) for the week. I try to stay really committed to what I schedule…just as I would if I had a doctor appointment penciled in. If I don’t have a game plan it likely won’t happen.
2. Mix it up
I have serious workout ADD… I’m always trying out new studios and fitness classes. Switching up my workouts isn’t only good for challenging myself physically, but it also makes working out more enjoyable. If workouts are fun you’re probably more likely to stick to it and maybe even workout harder!
Most studios offer a new student discount…some offer a free first class and others you can get a discounted first week or month, so don’t be afraid to ask. I also recommend signing up for Groupon and Gilt City in your area…I recently got a great deal for a boutique pilates studio I’ve been wanting to try, but the classes were really pricey. I’m currently rotating through BBG, running, barre, and yoga workouts.
3. Find a workout buddy
Working out is SO much more enjoyable if you’re not doing it solo. Having a workout buddy keeps you motivated and holds you accountable to make it to your scheduled workout. Heather and I do early morning workouts, and I would definitely be hitting the snooze button if I was going alone.
I’m also always finding ways to get active with my friends. Workouts are a great way to catch up with a friend….coffee and a walk or hike, barre class before brunch, or spin class before a smoothie run.
4. New gear
I’ll use any excuse to buy new workout clothes, so hey… what better reason do you need?! I recently pulled the trigger and purchased this Outdoor Voices crop and leggings and could not wait to wear it to the gym. This link will get you $20 off your order!
My theory is if you feel cute you’re more likely to get your buns to that yoga class and maybe even push yourself a little harder. A few other items I’m eyeing are this tank these leggings (imagine with a nice summer tan…) these socks (inspo much?!) and I really want these (in white) or these running shoes for my half marathon training. I also just found one of my fav Zella tanks on crazy sale!
5. Sign up for a race or event
I don’t know about you, but for me it is really motivating to have something to be working towards. I ran a 10k Turkey Trott last year and it felt really good to get back into running. So I reached out to a few running friends to see if they wanted to come stay with me in Seattle for a weekend and run a half marathon. This is will be my longest run ever! (fun fact… I’ve had 4 knee surgeries, so my body has not tolerated long distance running for a while) I’m just getting started with the training and it is fun to challenge myself in a way I never have before.
I’d love to hear ways that help you stay motivated to get your workouts in and also what workouts you’re loving right now!
