It’s dark and cold and putting on leggings and a sports bra might be the last thing you want to do. There can always be barriers (and excuses ;)) getting in between you and your workout and I feel like there are even more this time of year. Hitting the snooze button and staying warm and cozy in bed is soooo tempting during the cold winter months. Not to mention the holiday craze can leave you feeling exhausted, out of routine, and unmotivated.
I’m sharing 6 ways to ditch the excuses and stay moving this winter.
Create a weekly workout routine
It’s been about a month since I have been implementing this workout routine. Having a structured routine takes a lot of the guess work out of it. I use the Peloton app to choose my classes, but I know the body part and length of workout I’m doing each day which helps keep me on track.
Create your own routine. Write it all down so you know what you want to accomplish for the week just as you would do with any other task and cross it off as you go. You will feel so accomplished by the end of the week.
Find a workout you enjoy
Exercise can be viewed as hard; therefore, making it a chore to do every day. While I do think exercise should challenge you at times, it should also be fun and something you look forward to. There are so many different ways to move your body and the most important thing is that you in fact MOVE. Pick whatever form of exercise you enjoy so you’re more likely to stick with it. If you absolutely dread your workouts then you likely won’t stay consistent with it and consistency is KEY!
Accountability
If you have difficulty staying on track or self motivating then having a form of accountability can help! Whether it’s a workout buddy, trainer, program, etc. find something that will help keep you on track. Heather and I try and meet for a workout (on the tread) at least once a week. We do our hardest class of the week together to motivate each other to wake up and get it done. We always text after how glad we are that we motivate each other to get it done and feel great after.
Make it part of your routine
Schedule in your workout as you would any other important task you need to accomplish. Our schedules are all busy, but it’s important to make the time to get it done. Whether you wake up early, walk on your lunch break, or ask a friend to go to yoga instead of happy hour find a way to make it part of your routine. The more consistently you do, the easier it will feel.
Change it up
I’m so guilty of having workout ADHD. If you follow us on IG then you may notice I’m always trying new workouts, routines, classes, etc. I like to mix it up after a while and keep it fresh and fun. I’m always down to try a new workout. My brother in law took me to an F45 class on Thanksgiving and it was so fun to get outside of my comfort zone and try something different. I’ve also started to play more pickleball. I’m not the best out there, but it’s healthy to learn something new and it’s fun! Be open to trying new things even if you’re not “good” at it.
Also most studios offer a new student discount…some offer a free first class and others you can get a discounted first week or month, so don’t be afraid to ask.
New gear
When I have cute activewear on I swear it makes the workout better. Here are so cute new pieces I’m eyeing and buying 😉 I have these ribbed leggings and this long sleeve crop on my Christmas list. I love this tank for hot yoga, this tennis skirt for pickleball. These are my favorite shoes for cross training. Our favorite Nike crewneck is on sale and these socks are perfect to go over leggings this winter.
