I can only drink sparkling water…what is the difference? If I had 64 oz of sparkling a day vs regular is that bad?
Good news….sparkling water is harmless and hydrating. Sparkling is just as hydrating as still water, but has added carbonation. This, for some, can cause tummy troubles from the extra air, but the concern about calcium depletion from soda is not about the carbonation but may be due to other ingredients found in soda (not a lot of science to back this up)…so bubble water consumption is totally safe just skip the ones that contain artificial sweeteners.
Do you love your blender? Mine is old and trying to decide if it’s worth it to invest in a fancy one.
I (Alix) have a similar one to this Vitamix and I love it! Fancy blenders are a total investment, but in my opinion worth it because I use mine almost everyday. I used to have the magic bullet but it died after a year or so and did not do that great of a job blending up all the frozen goods in my smoothies. I basically don’t use my food processor anymore because the Vitamix can do everything I need.
I wanted to ask you about the vital proteins you mention in your blog and why you like them? I’m trying to make healthier choices. Also, can you take them while pregnant?
Alix: I did not know about vital proteins when I was pregnant and discovered it postpartum to help me out with alarming amount of hair I was losing PP. I use this kind because it dissolves super easy in my morning coffee and is tasteless. I continue to take it daily for hair, skin, nail and most of all gut health! You can read more about the benefits on the Vital Proteins website. I order mine off amazon 🙂
As for safety in pregnancy (and breastfeeding)…I’ve reached out to Vital Proteins and they recommend talking with your doctor before taking. I personally don’t see a reason why it wouldn’t be safe and actually think it would be very beneficial to take during pregnancy (maybe even help with stretch marks!) but of course speak with your doctor first!
*pro tip* if using in your coffee (or other hot beverage) only use 1 scoop (the servings size is 2 scoops) or it will clump-gross. If blending into a smoothie feel free to go for 2!
I see you doing hot yoga all the time and I’m also pregnant but afraid to keep doing it. Is it safe for me and the baby?
As always, consult your doctor first but I did hot yoga with both boys and I’m currently keeping up with it during this pregnancy. If you were doing hot yoga before you were pregnant, you can continue to do it during pregnancy.. that’s what my doctor told me. Just like Charlotte in Sex and the City, because she’s a runner she shouldn’t be afraid to run just because she’s pregnant 😉
Now, when it comes to hot yoga, you should absolutely modify (no twisting) and place yourself near the door so you get the most air flow. Tell your teacher that you’re pregnant before class starts so they can help adjust you or offer modifications. And I always wear my Apple Watch when I workout so I can gauge my heart rate. If it gets too elevated, I slow down or take child’s pose. And if you’re still nervous about it, start with a low intensity yoga class. If you go to Corepower, start with a 1 or 1.5 class and work your way up. I see so many pregnant women in my classes and one of my favorite teachers at my current studio (Modo in Seattle) is 8 months pregnant.. she teaches and takes class every day.. oh and she looks incredible.
Lastly, I don’t just do yoga for the physical benefits but the mental as well. It’s so important to keep your mind right, especially during pregnancy, so continue to workout and take care of your mind and body as much as you can. You’ll thank yourself later..
What’s the real difference between cold pressed juice and just juicing and does it really matter?
Cold-pressed juicing uses a machine called hydraulic press to basically press the juice out of fresh fruit and vegetables. This process generates no heat- hence the name cold-press. This process yields the most juice and nutrients. Centrifugal juicers are more commonly found in juice shops and cheaper, but because of the fast speed blade used to tear apart the produce…heat is generated and this is said to destroy some of the nutrients. Some nutrients are more susceptible to this than others. So, cold-press is said to be the “gold standard” for juicing, but there is not a lot of research to back this up and you can still get a lot of great nutrients from your green drink if using a centrifugal juicer.
I know you both started using the Drunk Elephant skincare line and I’m interested but don’t know where to start. Which products would you recommend to get introduced?
We bought all of our DE products at Sephora and the sales associates who helped us mentioned that they’ve been told by corporate that they need to start pushing other skincare lines other than DE because it’s selling out so fast.. that’s how good these products are and how much the Sephora associates love it.
Drunk Elephant is committed to using only clean ingredients that either directly benefit the skin’s health or support the integrity and effectiveness of our formulations. They never take into account an ingredient’s synthetic or natural status, but instead choose based on its safety and bio-compatibility. You won’t find what they call “the suspicious 6” of any kind in the products (1. silicones, 2. chemical screens, 3. sensitizing colorants/perfumes, 4. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) 5. essential oils, 6. drying alcohols), making them appropriate for every skin type. DE believes that these 6 ubiquitous ingredients are at the root of almost every skin issue. When formulating the products, they focus on pH and toxicity, always making sure that the actives are at efficacious levels.
I (Heather) have most of their products with the exception of a few. However, start with the Littles line and see if you like it. Below are the products I own and use every single day:
I want a new pair of sneakers for summer..but not workout shoes. Any good finds recently?
These are the pairs I’m eyeing or already own:
