My husband and I are heading to Napa next month for a wine tasting trip with friends and I’m struggling with what to wear.. it will be warm so I want to stay cool but don’t want to wear anything too short that might be inappropriate in a wine tasting setting. Help!
You already know what I’m going to say.. ROMPER! Or a dress but rompers make life easy (minus using whole having to pee part). I don’t know about you but after wine tasting all day, I’m not exactly voted “most ladylike” in the room and it’s easier to have a peep show in a dress versus a romper lol 😉 So here are a few I’m crushing on that would be perfect for wine tasting but aren’t too short or low cut:
Heather- We are headed to Kauai next Monday and I think I saw that you were there a few months ago? Just wondering if you have any recommendations on what to do with young kids…any hikes or other activities you know of? And any restaurant recommendations? Our son is 15 months old but there will be other family there to help if we need to sneak away! Thank you!
I’m so jealous! Kauai is definitely one of my favorite islands next to Maui and so great for families. We stayed at the Kauai Marriott Resort, which is located less than 10 minutes from the airport. Unfortunately during our last trip, we weren’t able to take the kids out adventuring much as they were too young (Cam especially) and the resort had all of the activities they could ever want. So I don’t have any recommendations for day trips, beaches or hikes with families but we were able to sneak away for a couple of dinners..
We frequented Dukes Kauai a few times (very family friendly) and it never disappointed. Delicious fresh seafood, beautiful setting and fast service. Our one fancy dinner we did was in Poipu, which might be closer to where you are actually staying. It’s called the Beach House Restaurant and I would recommend this as your date night spot for sure. It’s absolutely stunning.. ask for a window seat! We didn’t venture into Poipu as much as I would have hoped and will during our next visit.. I think their restaurant scene is way better than the location we stayed so ask your concierge service or the locals! Have a safe and fun trip!
Alix- what brand are the jean shorts you were wearing in stories last weekend?!
These Free People shorts! I love them and they look a lot like One Teaspoon, but cheaper 😉 I have them in black, but they also come in blue.
Heather- do you like the T3 curling iron you bought at the Nsale? How is it working and is it worth the splurge?
I have never splurged on a flat iron or curling iron in my entire life and I decided it was time and the T3 that I picked up at the sale is definitely living up to the hype. My hair is holding a curl much better and longer but I also think the key is texturing spray to go along with it. My hair won’t hold a curl if it’s too clean so I pair it with Oribe and it seems to be the answer. The curling iron is $100 during the sale and $160 after but other retailers sell it like Sephora.
What exactly is a keto diet and when would you recommend it?
I briefly touched on the keto diet in this week’s wellness Wednesday post here when I wrote a love letter to fat and also shared a yummy “keto cup” type of recipe. A ketogenic diet is essentially a VERY low carbohydrate (20-30 grams carbs per day) and really high fat and moderately high protein. The goal of this diet is to put your body in ketosis (you metabolize fat for energy because so little carbs aka glucose being consumed). The “classic” ketogenic diet was initially designed as part of a treatment plan for epilepsy- mostly for children to help manage seizures. This is a time when I would say there is valid scientific studies to back this up, but should be discussed with doctor and followed by a dietitian that specializes in this area.
But the keto diet has turned into newest weight loss trend. Once again, you know I’m anti-fad diets and this one is no different. This is a really difficult diet to follow and it is not effective unless you follow it strictly to remain in ketosis.
Heather- what nursing bras are your favorite?
My all time favorite nursing “bra”, which is more like a sports bra, is the Cake Wireless Nursing Bra. I’ve never been a fan of underwire or real bras after having a baby because your boobs just hurt and you want them as free as possible. I also have this version from Target and even sleep with them on during pregnancy because I need a layer between my PJs and my big ol boobs. If you’re going to splurge on a real nursing bra because a sports bra won’t cut it with your T-shirts when you’re out and about, go for the Cake version. The company just understands the need for comfort postpartum.
I saw you started your book club.. how fun! What book did you recently read and what’s next on the list? I want to join!
It was so fun having all the girls together to eat, drink wine, and catch up. Guess what…we even talked about the book!! We were all pretty proud of ourselves. For the month of July we read “Something in the Water” because it was featured in Reese Witherspoon’s book club, but we all felt that it kinda of missed the mark. It was a quick and easy page turner, but we felt the ending wasn’t satisfying. I’ll leave it at that in case you read it 😉 Here is the book line up for the rest of the year. Please send any book club recommendations our way!
August: The Paris Wife
September: Still Alice

My postpartum tummy is not a pretty sight. I still have a little baby pooch! I’m dealing with diastasis recti…it’s the worst! Do you know of any exercises to help it?!
I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with that- ugh! After I (Alix) had Quinn I went to see a pelvic floor, pregnancy and postpartum physical therapist for some pelvic floor issues. I also had about a 1-2 finger ab separation and she was able to give me some exercises to help. She taught me that while doing any abdominal exercise if your abs make a cone shape outwards- STOP. This usually means no crunches or planks. You want your abdominals to be pulled in and flat while doing ab exercises, so it is usually best to be lying flat on your back and doing heel taps and heel slides on the floor. I’m sure you’ve already done a lot of research, but I would recommend seeing a physical therapist so they can give you individualized exercises. Here, here, and here are similar ones that my PT gave me. Good luck mama!
