I’ve been eating a ton more protein lately but have noticed my cholesterol has gone up. Is this correlated? How can I maintain my protein intake but lower my cholesterol?
For most people, dietary cholesterol does not have a significant impact on blood cholesterol levels. For some, no matter how healthy they eat they will still have elevated blood cholesterol due to genetics which is called familial hypercholesterolemia. However, you can experiment with decreasing your intake of saturated fat via red meat, processed meats, and full fat dairy. Try incorporating more plant based protein sources like beans, edamame, lentils, tofu, nuts, quinoa, etc. Eating high protein is great, but make sure you’re still getting plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains…fiber is your friend 😉 Also be mindful of highly processed foods (even if high protein foods) and get adequate exercise. And take an omega 3 supplement while you’re at it!
