Do you guys take energy chews/gels with you on your runs? If so, what kind do you like and how many and how often do you take them?
Yes! For my long runs (I consider anything over 5-6ish) I carry water and chews. I like this kind and take about 1-2 blocks starting around mile 4-5 then every 20-30 minutes after that. It’s just whenever I’m feeling like I need something. On my 9 miler last weekend I took one block around mile 4 then another around mile 6-7. Hope that helps!
I have my 20 year high school reunion and don’t know what to wear! It’s at the school gym and the invitations don’t give much detail…it says dinner and dancing. I don’t feel comfortable getting all dressed up, but also don’t want to be completely under dressed. Can I wear jeans? Help!
I think jeans are 100% acceptable. You are going to have people show up who are totally gowned out and trying too hard and then you’re going to have people there in gym shorts.. you remember the type from high school. So I think you’re safe with a dark wash jean, blouse, or tank with blazer and wedges. Walk in looking like a Nordstrom or Madewell model (by the clothes I mean lol) and you’re golden. Some inspo for you:
Alix: do the no show socks you post in Instagram stay put while you run? Can you link them?!
Yes they totally stay put for me and they have the cutest designs. My “Mega Babe” socks are sold out most places, but found them here. I also like this pattern and this one too!
What Nike shoes do you recommend for running or do you only wear Adidas?
I wore these Nike’s for my last half marathon and just got these Adidas (FYI they are 25% off and so so good!) to finish my training and run this upcoming marathon in. I’m loving the Adidas right now and they are much lighter than the Nike’s IMO. I also have custom inserts for my running shoes that help give my knee more support.
What is a baby sunscreen that you guys recommend? I have a fair skinned 8 month old going on her first beach trip next week.
When Quinn was 7 months old we went to Hawaii and used sunscreen on her for the first time and I went with Beauty Counter. Think Baby, Babyganics, and Coola are all great options. Don’t forget to layer a long sleeve rash guard with SPF and a sun hat like this set for extra protection. Have fun!
Cryotherapy-health or hype? What are your thoughts?
For those of you that don’t exactly know what this means let’s back up. Cryotherapy literally means “cold therapy” and is a technique where the body is exposed to extremely cold temperatures for several minutes. Whole-body cryotherapy means you are immersing your body in extremely cold air or water by standing in an enclosed chamber and temps drop to between negative 200–300°F. It’s recommend to stay in the ultra-low temperature air for between two and four minutes. burrrr.
So are there benefits? Some people swear by it to help with recovery (pain relief, muscle recovery, and reduce inflammation) and others believe it provides mental health benefits (anxiety and depression relief). Also people might seek it for weight loss purposes seeing as our metabolism increases when we are cold, but I don’t think this type of therapy is the best route to take for weight loss.
I’ve never personally tried it so I can’t personally say, but I think it’s really interesting. I might start with a cryotherapy facial first 😉
If I am going to invest in a new coat for fall/winter, which one would you snag from the Nordstrom Sale?
I have a few favorites! This Kenneth Cole Double Breasted is classic. I like this hooded one for a more casual look. And if you’re really looking to invest, go with the Vince 100%.
Could you talk about the active vs. total calories on Apple Watch?
Such a good question…it’s confusing what the 2 mean. Active calories simply mean the calories burned while engaging in physical activity (running, hiking, biking…whatever you do for exercise). Total calories include active calories AND resting calories. Your body burns calories naturally even when you’re sitting at your desk at work.
Obviously these numbers aren’t 100% accurate and many factors (ex. age, sex, weight) contribute to your active and total calories burned. Apple Watch uses your heart rate to help determine your caloric output. I wouldn’t get too attached to these numbers because I can do the same workout with a friend and we work equally as hard and burn very different caloric amounts. Hope that helps!
Thanks for your questions this week! We continue to receive more and more via Direct Message on Instagram and we love that this community of ours is really taking off and engaging! We absolutely enjoy it so much! So keep them coming 🙂 Have a great weekend!!
