I saw a naturopath a few weeks ago and have implemented some changes to help with my hormones (trying to regulate my period). We are also working on ways to lower my LDL cholesterol and glucose levels. My HA1C and fasting blood glucose are technically in a normal range, but if the labs were one of my clients we would be talking about it.
They are higher than they should be with my lifestyle, but guess what? Increased blood sugar is another wonderful side effect of hormone changes as a women ages. Anyways, I thought it would be fun to share some of the notes my naturopath wrote out for me that I thought were good reminders that many women could benefit from.
- Levels CGM for one month to evaluate blood sugar levels and see how this effecting cholesterol (I have elevated LDL) and hormones.
- Organic ground flax seed daily and/or organic psyllium husk for fiber support for cholesterol.
- Emphasis on real Whole Foods, minimally processed foods. Aim for 3-6 servings of vegetables per day. Aim. For 30 or more servings of fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, spices per week to optimize gastrointestinal flora diversity.
- aim for 2-4 servings of fermented foods per day like sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi, miso, tempeh, and low-sugar kombucha.
- Add fat and fiber to smoothies like nut butter, flax seeds, hemp seeds/and or chia seeds to help stabilize blood sugar and support cholesterol levels
- Continue Carlson’s fish oil supplement and increase dose to 4-5 grams dose for cholesterol reduction, hormone balance, and skin support.
- Continue Athletic Greens until it’s gone. Trial off supplement and see if you notice a difference in energy without it. Can use Thorne pre natal multivitamin if needed for general nutrient support.
- Pique matcha
She also gave me a long list of specifics around organic food, avoiding the “dirty dozen”, water filters, HEPA filters, lead, plastics, body care and cleaning supplies, etc. While I think all of this is important and good to know how all of these exposures impact hormones, some of these things are not realistic right now and feel over the top. I use mostly glass contains, but sometimes use plastic bags for snacks. I try my best, but my goal isn’t to be perfect with all this stuff. It’s not realistic and I’m not going to drive myself (and my husband) crazy over it at this point.
I have a follow up appointment in 2 months and repeat labs in 4-6 months to see where things are at. I’m also working with a women’s health doctor and I appreciate having both types of doctors on my treatment team. I take in what they both recommend and ultimately make the decision I feel is best for my health.
